It All Starts with the Cleanse

It All Starts with the Cleanse

Posted by Fatima Seedat on

The most important step in your skincare routine isn't the serum. It isn't the eye cream or the moisturiser. Ask any facialist, any dermatologist, any skin therapist with twenty years of clients in their chair; they'll all tell you the same thing.

It's the cleanse.

Everything else you put on your skin depends on what happens in those first thirty seconds. A clean canvas isn't optional. It's the whole point.

Why the Cleanse Comes First

Your skin works hard all day. By the time you're done, there's a layer sitting on the surface that no amount of serum or moisturiser can work through - oxidised sebum, pollution particles, residual SPF. Left overnight, it leads to congestion, dullness, and breakouts.

A proper cleanse removes it. It resets your skin's pH and prepares the surface so that everything applied afterwards can actually penetrate and perform. A 2023 expert consensus published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology confirmed it: cleansing, moisturisation, and photoprotection are the three non-negotiable pillars of any skincare routine - and cleansing comes first.

It Starts with the Plant

Most skincare formulas begin with water. The Act Labs begins somewhere else entirely.

Plant oils pressed from seeds, kernels and fruits. Botanical extracts drawn from roots, bark and flower. Active naturals chosen because they work — not because they're fashionable. We do not use fillers to stretch a formula. We do not substitute cheaper synthetics where a botanical will do better. Every ingredient is there for a reason, and we can tell you exactly what that reason is.

Our products are formulated to international standards, benchmarked against European requirements - the same benchmarks applied to products sold at multiples of our price. Extraordinary botanicals should not be the preserve of expensive skincare. Our formulations contain the kind of ingredients most brands reserve for their premium lines, priced so that a full routine is within reach. Because the ritual only becomes a ritual when you can afford to repeat it.

Not All Cleansers Are Equal

A foaming gel that works brilliantly for oily, congestion-prone skin will strip and dehydrate someone with a dry or sensitised complexion. A balm that nourishes and melts away sunscreen on dry skin can feel too rich on combination skin already managing excess oil.

The right cleanse leaves your skin feeling clean, calm, and comfortable. Not tight. Not stripped. The Act Labs offers three primary cleansers, each built on the same botanical foundation, each formulated for a different skin need.

The Multi-Action Face Wash

Best for: Oily, combination, and congestion-prone skin

Most face washes make a trade-off: effective, or gentle. This one refuses to.

Salicylic acid derived from willow bark, one of the oldest known skin-clearing botanicals, keeps pores clear without aggression. Niacinamide regulates oil and calms redness. A prebiotic complex supports the skin's microbiome while the formula does its work. It lathers just enough to feel like it's working, without the aggressive foam that signals over-cleansing.

Rinse it off and your skin feels genuinely clean. Not tight, not irritated. The active work is being done by ingredients that have earned their place.

How to use: Morning and evening. Apply to damp skin, massage in circular motions for 30 seconds, rinse thoroughly. View Product

The Face Cleansing Oil

Best for: Dry, mature, and sensitive skin. Heavy makeup wearers. Anyone using SPF daily

Oil dissolves oil. It is the most effective way to remove makeup — including foundation, concealer, and long-wear or waterproof formulas that a water-based cleanser simply cannot fully lift. For heavy makeup users, this is the first step that makes everything else possible.

The formula is built on squalane — pressed from plant sources, structurally identical to the skin's own sebum — alongside cold-pressed sweet almond and jojoba. Together they emulsify on contact with water, lifting away makeup, sunscreen, and the day's accumulation without disturbing your skin's natural lipid barrier.

This is one of the most consistently repurchased products in the range. Customers come back for it specifically — not because they were told to, but because their skin told them to.

How to use: Evening. Apply 2–3 pumps to dry skin, massage gently for one minute. Add a little water — the formula turns milky as it emulsifies. Rinse thoroughly. Follow with the Face Wash as a second cleanse when wearing heavy makeup or SPF.  View Product

The Face Cleansing Balm

Best for: Very dry, sensitised, and compromised skin. Full-coverage and heavy makeup users

A solid balm that melts into a rich oil on contact with skin — and one of the most effective makeup removers in the range. Full-coverage foundation, long-wear formulas, heavy SPF — the balm dissolves all of it on first contact, without rubbing or tugging at the skin. For anyone whose skin reacts to conventional makeup removers, this is the alternative.

No synthetic surfactants. No foaming agents. Five cold-pressed plant-derived oils and a ceramide complex (NP, AP, and EOP) that matches the skin's own natural lipid structure — cleansing while simultaneously restoring the barrier it could otherwise disturb. Dermatologist Dr Alexandra Sommerlad identifies ceramides as among the most important ingredients for maintaining a healthy skin barrier. Some skin needs to be given back what stripping cleansers have taken from it. View Product

Fragrance-free. Vegan. Cruelty-free.

How to use: Morning or evening. Warm a small amount between fingertips until it melts, press onto dry skin and massage gently. Rinse or remove with a warm damp cloth.

Complete Your Cleanse

Once you've found your cleanser, two products take what you've just done and make it work harder. For anyone serious about their skin, these are the steps that separate a good cleanse from a complete one.

the act multi action toning lotion 200ml model applying with cotton pad

The Multi-Action Toning Lotion — The Double Cleanse Step

Apply this after your primary cleanser with a cotton pad and look at what comes off. Residue. Always. Even after a thorough cleanse, pollution particles, oxidised sebum, and trace SPF cling to skin. The toner lifts what your cleanser left behind — while delivering actives into freshly prepared skin.

The formula contains fullerene — a carbon molecule and one of the most potent antioxidants in modern skincare, neutralising free radicals at a rate significantly higher than vitamin C. Hyaluronic acid draws moisture in. A mild botanical exfoliant complex refines texture over time. Used consistently, it makes everything applied after it absorb and perform better. View Product

How to use: After cleansing. Sweep across the face with a cotton pad, or press into skin with clean hands. No rinse.

The Exfoliating Face Polish — The Weekly Ritual

Once or twice a week, your skin needs more than a daily cleanse. The Polish is built on a sodium bicarbonate base combined with jojoba, sweet almond, and squalane. The oils prevent the exfoliant from stripping — when you rinse it off, your skin doesn't feel scrubbed. It feels like a cream was applied. Reviewers note this independently, repeatedly, and with surprise every time.

Niacinamide and panthenol calm while the exfoliant clears. One tube lasts a year. In South Africa's summer heat, it earns its place managing the skin flaking that comes with prolonged sun exposure. Freshly exfoliated skin absorbs serums faster, holds makeup longer, and responds to actives more effectively. View Product

How to use: 1–2 times per week. Apply to damp skin with light circular motions. Rinse thoroughly. Follow with toner and your usual routine.

Your Cleanse by Skin Type

Oily / Combination — Multi-Action Face Wash. Salicylic, niacinamide, and prebiotic — without stripping.

Normal — Face Wash or Cleansing Oil. Either works. Choose based on whether you wear SPF or makeup daily.

Dry / Mature — Cleansing Oil or Cleansing Balm. Cold-pressed plant oils that cleanse without compromising hydration.

Sensitive / Reactive — Cleansing Balm. Fragrance-free, ceramide-rich, the gentlest option in the range.

Heavy makeup wearer — Cleansing Oil or Cleansing Balm. First step to dissolve makeup fully, follow with Face Wash if needed.

Weekly refinement — Exfoliating Face Polish. Once or twice a week, all skin types. Makes everything else work harder.

One Routine. One Non-Negotiable.

However many steps your routine has — the cleanse is the one you cannot skip or rush. Everything that comes after builds on how well you've done this one step.

Board-certified dermatologist Dr Erum Ilyas puts it simply: a good skincare routine does not need to be complicated or expensive. Find the cleanser that suits your skin, give it thirty seconds of proper attention morning and evening, and you've done the most important thing.

At The Act Labs, we began with that idea and built a range around it. Plant oils that have earned their place. No fillers, no shortcuts, no vague claims.

Wherever we are, the formula does not change. The ingredients do not change. The standard does not change. This is skincare with roots.

The rest is details.
